Emerge Aotearoa

Emerge Aotearoa is grateful for the support from the Burns Support Group for an ongoing fire safety campaign we are running.

Emerge Aotearoa is a not-for-profit organisation offering services to the people of Aotearoa in the mental health, addiction, disability, and social housing space.

On the week of 10 October 2022 Emerge Aotearoa held its inaugural Fire Safety Awareness Week for all kaimahi (staff)  and tangata waiora (clients).  Michelle Henry, Troy Hall, and Donna Maria Ritchie from the Burns Support Group attend a virtual hui on Wednesday 12 October 2022.

Troy and Donna shared their story with the Emerge Aotearoa whānau. This was truly a sobering experience for the Emerge Aotearoa whānau as they heard, first-hand, of the human impact fires and burns can have on those involved.

Emerge Aotearoa is extremely humbled by their story and their openness to share their journey with us.

As recognition of their courage Emerge Aotearoa gift Troy and Donna each a pounamu necklace carved specially for them and a Harakeke plant. The Harakeke plant has special significance here at Emerge Aotearoa as it symbolises our Lived Experience Framework.

This framework supports the organisation to truly privilege the voice of lived experience and diversity, one of our three strategic pou. Only fitting that we gift a Harakeke plant as they shared their voice with our whānau.

Already Michelle has ideas on how the Burns Support Group can support our mahi in 2023 as we continue to ensure the safety of the people we serve, in the whare that we provide.

We are grateful for the fire blankets that the group has already donated to Emerge Aotearoa.

We look forward to seeing where this partnership between the Burns Support Group and Emerge Aotearoa takes us both.

Survivor Sunday Xmas Party

The last Survivor Sunday event for the year was the funtime Xmas Party!

Fisher House hosted the afternoon with many sharing stories, children playing games provided by Promoking Ltd, lunch was served and raffles were won.

Face painter, Amy, did a fabulous job creating art with the children.

2022 we were lucky to be able to come together again and enjoy the events held over the year.

With an increase of numbers it is wonderful to welcome new and familiar faces to the burn family.

With Christmas just round the corner this gave an opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday time from Trustees, Board Members and Michele.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the  New Year, mark your calendars with the 2023 Survivor Sunday dates:

Mens Day Out 2022

A wonderful turn out for this event now in its fourth year.

With conditions against the odds, 21 men participated in this year's event, battling rain and wind.  A good time was had by all.

Coming from all over the country to mix and mingle, share stories and benefit from those similarly affected.

Friday night was greeted with a BBQ and introductions, leading into Saturday boating on Tauranga Harbour.  With good spirits they battled higher waves than one would like and sadly to report the fish weren't biting.  With this in mind it did not hinder the enthusiasm, and also celebrating the birthdays of Andrew and Troy on board.

This wonderful and valuable opportunity that has been established to support those during and throughout each individual burn journey.  It was truly inspiring to see all newcomers and familiare previous participants!

The Charity looks forward to 2023 and continuing with this event.  Details will be provided on this website in the near future!  Any feedback or comments would be welcome please don't hesitate to contact the office.

Burn Support Group would like to express our immense gratitude to the team at WISH 4 FISH, this amazing boat was generously provided for this occasion.

A special mention to TONY PEARCE, truly professional and accommodating throughout the process of organization.

Thank you to CAMERON THERMAL MOTEL, TAURANGA, FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY AND ACCOMMODATION.

Exciting new adventure planned for 2022

The Burn Support Group ise extremely pleased to announce a new and exciting project for 2022.

As we are all aware, the original camp for 2022 sadly had to be cancelled and will resume in 2023. This obviously was unfortunate news to share, however it is a pleasure to invite your children to the alternative initiative.

Looking to the future, and understanding the value and benefits of Camp Awhi, it has now been planned to take place during the July school holidays.

An exciting schedule has been designed for a “Wonderful Winter Camp”, the venue is Taylor Lodge, Ohakune.  Please find information on the dates and what is required from you when completing the application form.

It is vitally important to note the changes in the application form and complete where necessary.

We are all aware of the difficulties this year has provided for many. We certainly hope next year will bring on a new normal which allows everyone to reconnect, enjoy the snow and have a great time!

Keeping very transparent, the lovely hosts of this Lodge have advised they do not have restrictions on vaccination, for the requirement of the Charity it is vital you complete #8 on page 6 of the application form.

It is also advised that there is a definite number that can attend this camp, to ensure your child secures a place, PLEASE do not delay in returning your application. Regrettably parents shall not be able to attend this event, the Charity is very grateful for the wonderful leaders and support volunteer team that do ensure foremost the safety of all children attendees.

Thank you to all for your support, understanding and cooperation towards this amazing event. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Michele at the office.

Once we move into 2022, information regarding transport will be provided as with the list of recommended items to bring along.

Addington Race Night - 1 July 2022
On behalf of the Burn Support Group we wish to sincerely thank Bryce Dinneen for his professional services putting together a wonderful evening at Addington Raceway.

In the short space of time the event was a fabulous triumph, it was also a privilege to meet Bryce, having only had conversations on the phone, it was no surprise of the humble, generous and inspiring man he is!

Certainly the highlight of the night was to see Holly Timms, burn survivor and Cantabrian, share her story to a room of 323 people.

This was a first for Holly, battling her nerves she proudly spoke of her journey since sustaining burns from a young child.  As the saying goes you could hear a pin drop as everyone was captivated by her open and frank words.  Holly's father David was also there, we are sure this was truly a proud moment.

Also attending to support the event and Holly was Belinda Mckenzie (burn survivor), Beverly Cunniffe (burn survivor) who made the trip from Ashburton with friend Pauline, and Delwyn Breslau who gave a heartfelt thank you to Bryce and his team for their amazing support and the opportunity to raise the profile of the Burn Support Group through the South Island.

Funds that have been raised from the event from raffles, auctions and ticket sales will be provided to those working with burns at Christchurch Hospital.

Burn Suppor Group would like to thank all those that contributed to making this event the wonderful success it was.

Thank you to Christchurch for your warm welcome

Survivor Sunday - 26 June 2022

Apologies for the change to the schedule, unfortunately guest speaker Rangi was unable to attend. We would like to express our gratitude to Board Members, Dr. Julian Loft and Sam Barnes for standing in at the last minute.

Thank you to those that attended Survivor Sunday  on 26 June 2022.

An entertaining and informative session held by Doctor Julian Loft (plastic surgeon) discussing 30 years experience in skin, ways research has developed and methods that have proven to be successful and options on how to move forward in relation to burn injuries.

Dr. Julian gave a wonderful and insightful presentation on a sensitive topic, yet somehow created much laughter and merriment, a well received session with many Q & A following.

Along with raising the awareness of house incidents, Sam Barnes (Home Safety Networks), gave a friendly reminder of getting house ready with the Winter season upon us.

visual presentation of how easy fires can start with general items in the kitchen cupboards!

A HUGE THANK YOU FOR BOTH PRESENTATIONS

It was also a wonderful opportunity to credit ANDREW CAMERON (burn survivor) for all he has contributed during his time on the board as he sadly leaves us for work commitments.

We all wish Andrew the very best and know we will still see him at many events.

Congratulations were offered to Donna and Trevor as they embark on married life, may your life together be full of fun and pleasure.

Our appreciation to Bucklands Beach Yacht Club for the venue and the lovely lunch.

Burn Support Group would also like to thank Zoe Garden (reporter) and Times Newspaper for their support towards this invaluable event.

Probus Club of Pukekohe Ladies, 03 August 2021

Thank you to the wonderful Pukekohe Probus Group who gave Belinda and myself (Michele), a very warm and genuine welcome this morning.

To our surprise there was a group of approximately. 60 lovely ladies, who sat in awe as Belinda shared her burn journey and her busy life.

Everyone was interested and involved with a Q and A session regarding Belinda and her experiences along with the wonderful work the Charity provides to the burn community.

A very big thank you to Maureen Stone for inviting us along to chat with this wonderful group of ladies.

Burn Support Group would also like to extend  our appreciation to Belinda McKenzie for sharing her courageous story as a burn survivor.  Belinda shared her strong, passionate and brave self frankly and honestly even though she was feeling under the weather.

Survivor Sunday,
27 June 2021

Burn Support Group would like to extend a sincere thank you to the wonderful, informative and interesting guest speakers that attended this event.

Beginning with Ben and Koal from One Up Rehab, these guys share their passion and knowledge on what can only be described as a positive new product to the market.  Since meeting with the lads at Women's Retreat they have made numerous contacts who are as impressed as we have been with results.

Following a lovely lunch supplied by the team at BBYC we were captivated by research fellow, Vaughan Feistt.

With a wealth of knowledge and incredible hard work behind the scenes, Vaughan has been researching skin at Auckland University, the discoveries will be instrutmental for the burn survivors in the future.

Thank you to all those that attended, it is always a pleasure to catch up with the familiar faces and see the warm and welcoming embrace to newcomers.

A special mention to Kelsey Waghorn and her lovely mum, Shelley, it is wonderful you have met some of the lovely ladies that will be at the next year Retreat with you.

Next Retreat date is 26 SEPTEMBER 2021 - keep an eye out for upcoming   details.

"My research is focussed on growing skin grafts in the laboratory and the idea is to use them to treat patients with large burn wounds.

As you know, large burn wounds often require multiple rounds of skin grafting to completely cover all of the burn wounds.

Our goal is to take a small sample of healthy skin from the patient when they are admitted to hospital, then use that sample to grow skin cells in the laboratory and turn them into skin grafts.

By using skin grafts grown in the laboratory to cover patient burn wounds we hope that the time to complete burn wound coverage is reduced, reducing the number of rounds of skin grafting required and reducing the time spent in hospital.

By using skin cells isolated from a sample of the patient's own skin the skin grafts that we grow won’t be rejected, providing a permanent wound solution.

Over the last few years we have been improving the process of isolating and growing skin cells so that we can do this as fast as possible.

At the moment we are working on scaling up our process for growing skin grafts in the laboratory, we want to be able to grow multiple 20 cm x 20 cm skin grafts.

Once we can do that our plan is to start clinical trials, putting laboratory grown skin grafts onto patients, to make sure its safe and going to provide a benefit for the patient."

Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards 2021

Donna Gregory Marshall, Waikato
After spending most of her life struggling with the physical and psychological trauma of severe burns sustained as an 11-month-old, Donna Gregory-Marshall has recently embraced her scars, built self-esteem and resilience and supports other burn survivors on their journeys to self-acceptance.

She is now a peer support person and mentor to the New Zealand burns community, and regularly shares her story, models her body for burn resources, and provides education to health professionals, including running sessions in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit at Middlemore Hospital.

In 2019, Donna was chosen as a New Zealand representative at the Phoenix World Burn Conference.

Dear Donna,

I can think of no one more deserving, and on behalf of the Burn Support Group, we hope this expresses our appreciation of the continued support, time and energy you bring to this Charity. I hope this gave you a little sunshine for the day xx

Our very sincere Congratulations!

Men's Day Out -
26 September 2020

26 September saw 13 men attend the Men's Day Out.

With the perfect day to set off on the water, the guys with ample supply of food, liquid and bait, headed off to catch fish.

Unfortunately, the only feedback to come back not so positive was, 'the big fish weren't biting!'

This is the second Men's Day Out to be held and the Charity is very happy to see the number of attending has increased.

This fun day out on the harbour fishing charter provides an informal opportunity for burn survivors to enjoy the company of others similarly affected.

A warm welcome to those partaking for the first time, we look forward to growing connections..

Again 'Seasprite Charters' skipper, Alan, offered his services to support and assist with this growing event...  Many thanks to Alan for his continued support.

Men's Day Out is available for burn survivors, father's of burn survivors and peer support males.

Testimonial from Bruce Holland - first time attendee of Men's Day out
"What a great event!  Simple but effective. Wonderful atmosphere. Relaxed and yet engaging.

It was really good to listen to what others had to say about their experience, how their burns had / were affecting their lives, and in some cases, the challenges they faced / were facing daily.  It certainly opened up my eyes to a lot more to things around burn treatment and rehabilitation.

And then there was the emotional aspect of it all. I didn't realise I took so much for granted. Being able to share something that I had learned with someone who was struggling with an issue, and seeing the benefit in that....

Thank you so much for such a great experience. The opportunity was really appreciated."

Middlemore Hospital education days 2020

The BURN SUPPORT GROUP are extremely pleased to be approached by Emma Gils, Clinical Specialty Nurse in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, working at Middlemore Hospital.

Emma had the task of planning for 2020 Education days and it is a welcome request for the Charity to speak with the PACU nurses about the long term effects of burn survivors and the support provided by the Burn Support Group.

"PACU nurses will often only see the worst of our burns patients as they wake up from surgery - sore, disorientated and frustrated.  Once these patients no longer require surgery at Middlemore we have no closure regarding how they have recovered.  It would be beneficial for our nurses to gain a wider perspective about what it is like to be a burn survivor"    EMMA GILS

Last month saw Donna Gregory-Marshall speak, next month will see burn survivor, Heather Stewart, share her story with the nurses, her time in hospitalisation and the ongoing journey to now.

If you are a burn survivor and would like to participate in this opportunity please contact Michele at the office, below are the available dates for the end of year sessions.

ON BEHALF OF THE BURN SUPPORT GROUP WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK EMMA for involving the Charity in these beneficial sessions:

-  20 July 2020
-  26 August 2020
- 10 September 2020
-  14 October 2020

Survivor Sunday - 12 July 2020

A warm welcome was given to Sam and Victoria Barnes, Home Safety Networks, Waikato at the Survivor Sunday event on 12 July 2020.

Sam gave a very impressive demonstration on the easily avoided hazards that can be found around the home which can lead to "fires"

With an extensive knowledge on fire safety, smoke alarm detectors and the invaluable fire blanket, the group was presented and armed with a wealth of advice to follow in their own homes.

Also giving opportunities to the burn community was the new owner of the Talent Tree Agency.  Tracey-Maree spoke about the business and the available offers that she has provided for the B.S.G.  To learn more, check the website under upcoming events.

Thank you to both these organisations who offer monthly donations to the Burn Support Group contributing to enhancing burn survivors journeys.  It was fabulous to see the many familiar faces and also meet new members, as our wonderful group numbers increase..

Special Mention to Aviva Raisin for supporting with the raffle donation and to Dixie Neil, a very happy winner of the raffle.

Next Survivor Sunday is promoted for the 20 September 2020, and Burn Support Group look forward to seeing everyone there.  Please take into account when you commit to this event catering costs are provided by the Burn Support Group confirmed numbers and attendance is greatly appreciated.

A massive Thank You to Augustine store

An amazing opportunity for 10 women burn survivors leading into the Women's Retreat.

On saturday morning, 14 March 2020, the store put aside two hours for these ladies to have a giggle and some fun as they selected five items of clothing and a pair of shoes at no cost!

This extremely generous offer was so appreciated and brought much delight for those involved.

Yana and Jake were wonderful, assisting the ladies and sharing stories.

The Burn Support Group truly appreciate being incredibly lucky recipients of this generosity..

Survivor Sunday Xmas Party

It was a very Merry Xmas celebration for the final "Survivor Sunday 2019"!
With 40+ people attending, it was a great catch up for the children before Camp 2020, with the added fun of face painting by Cl aire Lenaghan, surprise Xmas gift, and the ice cream truck with Atlesh Sharma  providing soft serve ice cream.  Thanks also to the Spit Roast Catering Company.

Parents, burn survivors new and old shared stories, celebrated the end of a year and looking forward to a healthy, happy new decade.

Burn Support Group wish to thank all those that have contributed in many ways to the success of a busy and constructive year.  It is a pleasure to see the increase in numbers of those attending the Survivor Sundays and the many other events throughout the year.

Hi All,

I would like to say a huge thank you... Thank you all for your support throughout 2018/2019 and for making the Burn Support Charitable Trust the mighty presence it is today.  To you all, the volunteers including the patrons, office Staff, Board members, Trustees, Ambassadors, to all the burn survivors and survivor's families and on to the sponsor's who have all made the Burn Support Group an amazing resource for all those in need.

The last few weeks, with the White Island eruption, has more than likely stirred more than a few emotions and feelings of dread among you, but as you have done in the past and future, the survivors from this incident will also rise from the ashes just like the mighty phoenix.

The Burn Support Charitable Trust needs to hold their heads high; as a support group you punch well above your weight and size compared to other countries and organisations.  The amount of support you provide, resources, education and donations to the burn's wards of many hospitals for equipment and training is invaluable.

Enjoy your Christmas and New Year, and stay safe.

Kia Kaha,
Peter Sharp
(Past President)

Survivor Sunday - 18 August 2019
Hosted by the stunning venue, The Lounge, in Howick, and guest speaker Joshua Sade-Inia, his story and his words, a very inspiring account of his journey to date.

Joshua's story can be found on the Attitude Live website - click here

Written by Joshua:

Solid day at Survivor Sunday run by the Burns Support Charitable Trust, a charity that encourages community for burns survivors and support people as well as awareness around burns and burns prevention. Felt honoured to have my documentory played and be the guest speaker.

I chose to speak about the difference between a victim and a survivor, the importance of not letting your struggles hold you down and ruling you, but using them as a means to push you forward. Further, whilst there may be some negative connotation to scars that we have, it is important to see your scars, whether internal or external, as a story of how far you have come, how much you have grown and how courageous you are for having battled and overcome these struggles.

Overall a solid day with great and cheeky banter along the side and many amazing and inspiring burns survivors coming together to celebrate being the amazing survivors they all are and being a community together. Couldn’t ask for a greater and more inspiring bunch to be honest."

Thank you from all those that attended the event, a very warm welcome to the new faces, the Burn Support Group looks forward to catching up again on 8 December.... the last Survivor Sunday for 2019!

Youth Search and Rescue
15 June 2019

Burn Support Group would like to thank the YSAR team, Youth Search and Rescue, Auckland.

On Saturday 15 June, there were 15 youngsters that volunteered their time and service for two hours through the morning.  Working in groups they made a brilliant job of arranging resources for the end of the year.  Packs are now readily available for those community groups, schools or organisations that are looking for advice and education on dealing with burns....

A big THANK YOU to Kerrie Rutherford for suggesting and taking part in a very well organised day.

Burn Support Group wish to express their gratitude to the group, as young people heading out shortly into the big wide world being a part of your group, YSAR, will give you a great advantage moving forward....

On behalf of the Burn Support Group we wish each and every one of you all the best for your bright futures.
Marvellous Maroochydoore!
30 May - 02 June 2019

Attendees: Delwyn Breslau, Melissa Owen-Paterson, Sweeta Bajaj, Michele Henry.

2019 proved to be again a wonderful platform for the Australian Burns Forum.

This year the venue was Maroochydore, four days of fabulous presentations, plenty of suggested ideas on moving ahead with your journey and how best to assist the individual during this time....the professionals shared their tools and services which offer necessary assistance whilst moving forward.

Along with the enthralling presentations all those attending, 60 from throughout Australian states, all participated in fun activities such as Gail's creating our own wine labels which were attached to the lovely wine supplied by John from Adelaide.

A particular highlight where the smiles were beaming was the session on the drums! The energy, positive vibes and enthusiasm rocked the room as we all tried our talents as drummers, exception activity!

On our last day we had the pleasure of dining for lunch at The View Restaurant, Noosa, run by the famous and well known Matt Golinski. Matt circulated the room meeting and greeting everyone, as a burn survivor his connection was very paramount for all to see.

The Burn Support Group NZ would like to acknowledge and thank all those that contribute to making this event possible.  The Burnslife Board who put so much hard work into preparing and scheduling this wonderful event, it is truly appreciated.

To the Board of the Burn Support Charitable Trust, thank you for making it possible and giving the opportunity for the lucky recipients that took part this year.  There is a lot to be learnt, shared and discovered at these amazing forums.

On behalf of this years attendees thank you for the experience.  It is wonderful that Burn Support Group can share the goals we achieve throughout the year.

Award for continuous service and support
Burn Support Charitable Trust are very proud to see Kerrie Rutherford, our amazing volunteer, receive wonderful recognition for her continuous service and support towards the Charity.

Kerrie has played a vital role within the organisations for the past two years.  Congratulations from all of us, we are extremely fortunate to have you on board.

On a personal level it is a pleasure to have nominated Kerry, this award is so well deserved.  Behind the scenes, Kerrie is indispensable, and it's great to have her in the office and taking part in all the events that are available.  Thank you Kerry and long may it continue :)
Without the ongoing commitment and strong support of volunteers in our local community on a weekly basis, sports clubs, schools, churches and community groups would not be able to complete a number of key tasks of their functions.

This year's Baby Show exhibition had approx. 13,951 people attend.  Alongside the many retailers, Burn Support Group were there to raise the awareness surrounding the effects of burns.  It is paramount, with the increase of young children hospitalised for sustaining burn injuries, that more care and attention is taken over the smallest of details in the home where these unfortunate incidents can occur.  Statistics tell us 1 in 5 child will occur a burn injury.

The burn survivor journey is long and often painful, not only the physical appearance will alter the future of lives, there is more often than not an emotional experience that can last a lifetime.

Prevention and Education will help reduce number of accidents.

If you would like the Burn Support Group to speak at your school, community group or health department contact michele@burns.org.nz for available resources or make an appointment...

Thank you to all those that shared their stories with those at the stand along with the generous donations.....

Survivor Sunday - 5 August 2018
A fabulous day enjoyed by all those that attended Burn Survivor Sunday.  The Howick Golf Club was a lovely venue and provided a lovely lunch.

Burn Support Group would like to thank Carol-Ann Hanna for sharing stories of the 'Dancing with the Stars' show.  It was wonderful to have Carol join us and there has been suggestion of a future collaboration (watch this space!)

After lunch the group took to expressing their creativity, with the assistance of "Sip and Paint", Yolanda and Tracee. The end result was brilliant and I think everyone was surprised with how stunning it looked. This masterpiece was created by the ladies on the day and will be auctioned off at a Fundraising Event on 27 October 2018.

Congratulations to Kathy Mummery, winner of the raffle.

Burn Survivor Sundays are set up for ladies to meet and greet, share stories and establish relationships which can support their needs.

It's such a pleasure to see familiar faces at these events and very exciting to meet the newcomers.
The next Survivor Sunday is on 17 November 2018.

Waikato Quiz Night - 27 July 2018
Friday 27 July was a wonderful success as Hamilton held the first ever Quiz Night Fundraiser.

With just on hundred people attending, the evening was a lot of fun and laughter.  We would like to acknowledge Jim Kayes and his lovely wife, Hedia, who offered their time to support the Charity.

Jim was an amazing Quizmaster and had the crowd eating out of his hand - even able to convince guests to sing songs earning those precious extra points!

$5,500 was raised on the night.  Funding will be spent on equipment for the Waikato Burns Unit along with a contribution towards the Annual Children's Burn Camp 2019.

The Burn Support Group would like to make special mention to Hannah Will from the Waikato Burns Unit, Monique Mulhern (Te Runanga O Kirikiriroa) Jess Johnson (Fire Emergency NZ) and Neil Tolan (Western Community Centre) your support and help is truly appreciated.

Without the assistance of all those that contribute to the raffles and Auction Items events such as this would not work so successfully.  A huge acknowledgement to all those did, Burn Support Group is extremely grateful for your generosity.  The venue, FraserTech, was perfect, along with the fabulous caterers.

With all the positive feedback we look forward to supporting next year's event.

Dawn Johnston Award Presentation - 20 June 2018
Several weeks ago our dear friends, Beverly and Ian Handisides, invited us to the annual Inner Wheel Presidency Changeover Dinner as their guests.  This gesture was not out of the ordinary as they have both held Presidential roles in both Inner Wheel and Rotary over the years and had invited us to these dinners on a couple of previous occasions.   It was to be a semi-formal affair to be held at ‘The Lounge’ Howick on the 20th June.   They would be collecting us at 6.10pm  . . . . our diaries were marked.

After being greeted with champagne flutes, we mixed and mingled with some familiar faces and were then seated at the ‘top table’ with the District Governor, the Incoming President, their immediate family and our friends.   After dinner we sat back to enjoy the speeches and to our dumbfounded surprise, Ian took the podium and microphone and started telling our story!  I was totally perplexed and wondering WHY???

All was to be revealed when he handed over the microphone to Dawn (Johnston), who then explained that because the motto of Inner Wheel for this year had been chosen as ‘Leave a Legacy’ (and given that at that stage she had only been give two months to live), she wanted to create 'an annual award which gives recognition and pays tribute to a person (or persons), who in the face of adversity displayed perseverance in overcoming obstacles in pursuance of their goals and dreams. They will have responded to adversity, bounced back and in doing so, have been inspirational or helpful in assisting others become full contributors to their community.’
Picture
In the planning stages of establishing this award last year, it was never envisaged that (thanks to her medical treatments), she would actually be presenting it herself . . . . . a whole year later!   Alan and I felt very privileged and humbled that we had been chosen to be the inaugural recipients of this very special ‘Dawn Johnston Koru Award’.   We also felt very honoured in that both Simeon Brown and Jamie Lee Ross had both been given special dispensation from parliament to attend the presentation.  However, due to last minute issues in parliament, Jamie was unable to attend, but we enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with Simeon and his wife Rebecca.

The koru symbol was chosen by Dawn because it depicts new life, positive change, personal growth, harmony and hope for the future.

Baby Expo, Waikato
29 June - 01 July 2018

Burn Support Group are pleased to announce they will be supporting Waikato Plunket during the Baby Expo 2018.  Educational resources are available with helpful hints to keep your home safe.

Burn Support Charitable Trust will be attending again this year.  Statistics tell us the incidents happening in the home are on the rise and hot water is still the major reason for youngsters sustaining burn injuries.

Look for us at the show and pick up your educational information, which could make a difference.

Many thanks to  Kylie Wilson from Waikato Plunket for combining Burn Support Group into this years stand. It is a valued contribution to share resources raising the awareness of both organisations and the support that is available to the community.

With it being a terribly cold weekend it was great to see how many parents and bubs made there way through the Claudelands venue. leaving with helpful hints and resources to aid in safety at home.

Opportunity of a lifetime for our very own, Brayden Warnock-Hannon.
Burn Support Group are thrilled to announce Brayden Warnock-Hannon is heading to CAMP I-THONKA-CHI in Dallas, 3 - 8 June 2018.

Attending with Brayden is Nicholas Nielson (board member) who will be taking part as a Camp Counsellor.

Brayden was chosen to represent New Zealand after participating at the Camp, due to the generosity and kindness of an extremely wonderful couple who wish to remain anonymous. Having met with Brayden they were impressed as to how this great young man is handling his journey as a burn survivor.  They felt by offering this valuable opportunity to Brayden it would strengthen, encourage and increase his confidence for the future.

Burn Support Group is very proud of Brayden and know he will be an amazing ambassador for the New Zealand Burn Community.  It will be exciting to hear him share his experiences which can be utilised at our very own Camp Awhi.

It’s difficult to put into words how beneficial Brayden's and my trip was to Camp I-Thonka-Chi because, a) I’m not the greatest journalist in the world and b) how can I accurately portray how amazing it felt to cultivate life-time bonds, help kids conquered fears, and the joy being accepted into a wonderful community sponsored by another wonderful community?  But I will try do my best.

In reality the trip was wildly successful in a lot of different ways. Too much to put onto paper, and even better understood by seeing the smiles of our kids in photos. I – going as a Board member of the BSGCT – was able to grow, learn, and build relationships from others’ success and challenges to benefit our own organization and Camp. I – on a personal aspect – was able to grow, learn, and build relationships as someone who simply cares deeply for Burn Survivors, and was able to continue to nurture that by spending time with more Survivors. Something I am always trying to achieve.

You learn at Camp that as a Burn Survivor there are similarities despite differences in things like age, ethnicity, gender, or what city you live in. Burns have no preference in who it’ll affect. But what this opportunity gave Brayden and I was to show and share that Burn Survivors can have similarities, struggles, and successes despite being thousands of kilometres apart and coming from different countries and cultures. It also gave us an opportunity to transform our new-found friends’ outlook. Teaching them about Kiwi culture and perseverance, our strengths as a community, that No we are not part of Australia, and this amazing game called Rugby (which we happen to be VERY good at).

I truly cannot put into words how grateful I am for this opportunity. How much knowledge I received from the experience. How much I cherish the memories and friendships that I made. And how thankful I am that this wonderful community made this a possibility. But that won’t stop me from trying. Thank you too all who had a part, small or large, in making this a reality for a very well deserving young gentleman and a Kiwi-American Burns Supporter.

Nick Nielson (Board Member)

To The Sponsors:  Generosity invites us to put ourselves in another's shoes, see and feel the existence of a pressing need, realise that it is within our power to help, and then act in whatever way we can.

Thank you from all of us associated with the Burn Support Charitable Trust, your very kind gesture is truly appreciated

Our sincere appreciation to the incredibly kind sponsors!

Survivor Sunday - 20 May 2018
Sunday 20 May saw a busy, fun, active day of pampering for 18 ladies as they attended Burn Support Groups Survivor Sunday.

It was so good to see familiar and regular faces along with the new.  The support at such an event can be overwhelming, with the meeting and greeting of likeminded people who understand better than anyone the journey's they share.

This day gave the opportunity to the Burn survivor to give back to that person who has been a tower of strength, the carer or the support person listening and caring playing a major role in their lives.  With all the amazing positive feedback, we are planning for a second event where we hope to see you all again.

A very big thank you to the Angels from Feeling Fab Charity (Feeling Fab Charitable Trust was set up by Elizabeth York, with the wonderful support of Ambassador Suzy Heazlewood), as without your selflessness and generosity these events would not be possible for any fortunate groups.  Thanks to the ladies who gave their time to volunteer for the day - from the beautiful lunch ladies team to all those others that pampered, supervised and assisted in organising this day the Burn Support Group are very grateful.

Please keep an eye out for the next date!

Adelaide Burns Forum Report - 2 - 5 May 2018
Hosted by the Julian Burton Burns Trust

ATTENDEES:
TRACEY MAREE HOUIA, LENA TOKUAFU, MICHELE HENRY, DELWYN BRESLAU

Julian Burton was a burn survivor of the Bali bombing in 2002. He returned to Australia with 65 other burn survivors and 35% burns.  He subsequently and together with Professor John Greenwood and Charge Nurse Sheila Kavanagh, set out to raise $3,000 for a TV and some DVDs for their hospital.  Over the past 15 years they have raised almost twenty million dollars to support burn education, care and support initiatives all over Australia and it was felt that the time was currently right to wind up the Trust and disseminate the residual funds.

This 3 day forum was attended by 25 participants from all over Australia.  It was held at the Adelaide Shores Resort where we were all superbly accommodated in self contained chalets alongside a very long coastal beach.  It kicked off with a barbeque on Wednesday evening and concluded with a magnificent black tie Fire and Ice Ball, attended by 400.   Almost $1,000,000 of the remaining funds of the Trust were distributed to Kidsafe SA, Kidsafe Australia, ANZBA Association and Burnslife. (The latter being given $100,000)  With these funds, Burnslife will be continuing to hold these forums on an annual basis and to which we have been warmly invited.  The next forum will be held in Maroochydore, (Sunshine Coast, QLD), in June, 2019.

We were all very impressed with the programme content and calibre of the speakers, most particularly Professor Greenwood’s presentation on his ‘invention’ of BMT which will eventually be revolutionizing burn care world wide by eliminating donor sites.  Watch this space!

We are all extremely grateful for this wonderful opportunity given us by the Burn Support Group Charitable Trust.  We all feel and know that we have each gained and benefited from this amazing experience of learning, and meeting other burn survivors, their caregivers and the medical staff who have cared for them.

Their hospitality was extended with a terrific final day outing into the renowned Barossa Valley, sightseeing and wine tasting.

There is no doubt that our trans Tasman ties are now very strongly bonded and we are all now happily anticipating future combined events.

Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.
Tracey, Lena, Michele and Delwyn   😄💞🌷😀

Waikato Baby Show
30 - 31 June 2017

The Burn Support Group manned a stand with resources available to the public raising the awareness identifying the hazards that can be found around the home.

Six thousand people attended over the weekend; this time of year numbers are high for children receiving minor burns; it is great that the Waikato region public are very receptive to the Burn Support Group three pronged approach - Prevention, Education and Care.

Thank you to Tracee McKenzie for her generous time and valued support donated to the Burn Support Charity.  Also acknowledging the continued support from Niugini Organics, who donated 20% of sales to us.

A Women's Burn Survivor Weekend Retreat
24 - 26 March 2017

Held at Anawhata Beach and designed to cover all the feminine issues faced by adult burn survivors.

This retreat was a safe place for healing and a chance for adult women burn survivors to share feelings about painful experiences perhaps for the first time, while simultaneously enjoying and being in the company of other similarly affected women.

Workshop sessions were held by qualified practitioners on:

MASSAGE with qualifed massage therapists, BRONY THOMAS and IVANA REDDINGTON from the NZ College of Massage Therapy.

MAKE-UP TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES: A Senior MAC Cosmetic Artist, KRISTY LEE WALLACE gave tuition on creative make-up techniques to disguise skin discoloration and scarring.  A non-invasive technique to increase self-esteem.

THE REAL ISSUES: Workshops were facilitated by National Burn Unit Health Psychiatrist, KAT SKINNER on ‘Self-care and Resilience for Burn Survivors’ and ‘Intimacy and Sexuality’.  Vital issues for women burn survivors.
THE APPEARANCE ISSUES: Of ‘THE ACUTE MANAGEMENT OF BURNS & LONGER TERM MANAGEMENT OF SCARS & REVISION PROCEDURES’ addressed by a plastic surgeon, MARTIN REES who also addressed a Q and A session.

Although quite common overseas, we believe that this is the first such weekend retreat ever held in this country and was facilitated by the Burn Support Group Charitable Trust based here in Auckland.

By coming together to heal, the women empower each other, affirming the triumph of the human spirit.

Rotorua Lions Convention Opening Ceremony
On Friday 24th February 2017, Alan and Delwyn Breslau were given the opportunity to present at the Opening Ceremonies of the annual Lions Convention in Rotorua, to about 170 of their members, including local dignitaries, Mayor Steve Chadwick and MP Todd McLay.

It was a wonderful opportunity to 'spread the word' about our work and the needs of our burn survivors.  Also that we rely solely on the generous support of the public and service organisations such as themselves and that we would be extremely grateful to be chosen as one of their considered charities for any future projects.
