ANGELIQUE BARNES:
I am a married 49 year old mother of four. My burns story began in 1975, as a 14 month old baby I fell into a bath of hot water. It was thought that I would not survive such injuries, but I sure did! I then began a lifelong physical and emotional journey of acceptance, healing and recovery, with the help of my amazing family who have been my strength and comfort throughout many surgeries and helped me deal with the many social, psychological and physical challenges. Attending the Phoenix World Burns Congress 2023 in Maryland, USA is going to be an incredible experience and opportunity to gain further growth and understanding of burns survivor issues that impact their daily lives. I hope that this experience assists me to help other people who have been burnt and may be struggling with their new changed bodies and lives or in assisting in advocating for burn safety and prevention. I would sincerely like to thank the board members of the Burns Support Group Charitable Trust Inc. for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the New Zealand Representatives attending the Phoenix World Burns Congress 2023. I look forward to attending with much anticipation and excitement. |
JAYNE SWINBURN:
Hey everyone, my name is Jayne. I am a burns survivor of 6 years after an industrial sized pot of boiling water came with me as I fainted. I am really excited to have been chosen to go to the phoenix world burn congress. I can’t wait to experience and learn everything that I can and meet new people. Thank you to the board of trustees for picking me for such an amazing experience. |
RICHARD YOUNGER:
I am a burns survivor from an event in 2002 that left me with 50% full thickness burns. Now some 20 years later and making the most of life, I am a Trustee, Board member and Treasurer of the NZ Burn Survivor's Charitable Trust. Recently elected onto the ANZB CAG working group I hope to continue to support other Burn Survivor's here and abroad. The experience I bring to this year's WBC is the continuation of my knowledge and understanding on how best to support burn survivors, and shared experiences from other survivor's. |
AROHA ANDREW:
Kia Ora, I am a burns survivor of 6 years. I sustained full thickness burns to 65% of my body due to a house fire in 2016. This opportunity to connect, grow and resonate with beautiful people who share similar experiences of loss, grief, trauma and self-image will be invaluable to me. In sharing our experiences, I have found comfort and healing, knowing I was not and am not alone in my journey, and I hope coming to congress ignites those strong feelings of empowerment and strength where I can intern bring those feelings back home to NZ and help others on their own paths of recovery. I cannot express how incredibly grateful I am for this opportunity. Thank you to the board for allowing me this gift of growth and healing. I cannot wait to see where this takes me. |
NICK NIELSON:
I am honoured to be going to the World Burn Congress as a representative of New Zealand and our Charity. After many years of knowing about it, and hearing how it has impacted the lives of those who’ve attended, I am looking forward to learning as much as I can, and bringing back that knowledge to benefit the lives of Survivors in New Zealand. |
Burn Support Group extends our sincere appreciation for the wonderful warm hospitality provided by founder, CEO Susie O'Neil and her incredible team at KIDS FOUNDATION.
Over four fantastic days, four representatives from New Zealand joined in the fun, activities and workshops provided celebrating 30 years of this terrific organisation. We were thrilled to take part in all on offer, meet so many wonderful inspiring people with a special thank you to ERYNNE, for supporting the logistics and creating an easy project! "I thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to fly to Australia and take a boat ride to Tangalooma Island to have a blast at the KIDS foundation camp, and see how similar yet different this group is from ours. I met such amazing and kind people there and they made Carla and I feel right at home. I have many extended families and this camp, as well as our burns camp in New Zealand, are definitely some of them. Meeting even more people who have had the same experiences as me and giving activities I found a little scary a go at least once were definitely the highlights of my camp experience, though I loved everything about it. I am really thankful for being invited by the Burns Support Charitable Trust to this camp and would really love to see everyone I met again. It really is incredible that we were able to come to Tangalooma island and I will never forget the beautiful places I saw and wonderful people I met." Ngā Mihi, Jovana Stankovic |
15 August 2023 Report: Phoenix Camp, Tangaloom Resort, Australia To the Board Members, The four day Burn Camp held 11 – 14 August was an empowering and enriching experience for burn survivors and first-time attendees from New Zealand. The camp aimed to provide a supportive environment for parents, individuals and volunteers to heal, connect and grow. Throughout the camp, a range of various activities were organised to help participants regain their confidence, self-esteem while building resilience. These activities included powerful workshops on trauma, self-expression, team building exercises, along with outdoor adventures that challenged individuals to step out of their comfort zones. Workshops focused on emotional healing, coping strategies and self-care an integral part of the camp. Adult participants engaged in sessions where they learned how to manage the emotional and phycological aftermath of burns also developing healthy coping mechanisms, which foster better relationships and understanding of trauma throughout the individual’s journey, giving room for personal development. These sessions were without a doubt welcomed, extremely well received and intense lessons provided by clinical phycologists, health professionals and burn survivors sharing their stories. The camp provided a safe space for these survivors to connect with others who have faced similar challenges and give a sense of belonging. The attending burn children were also experiencing the value of unity, in their groups they were involved in games, team building all while having fun. On behalf of the Kiwi contingency, the camp offered an opportunity to connect with fellow burn survivors, forging connections, making friends and providing an insight to the Australian support network. It was an invaluable experience, one that will leave a lasting impact on those that participated. It is a very rewarding result that our group did share their own experience of our camps and spoke so highly of the enjoyment and confidence that is provided to them. It was a privilege to have Karla and Jovana attend, we can be very proud of their involvement and contribution during the four days. With the feedback from many discussions that took place, fresh new ideas and many positive initiatives can be utilised moving forward. Discussions that took place with staff and parents of their organisation, certainly can give us a sense of pride on what we have been able to achieve within our resources in New Zealand, it was not anticipated how many follow our website and the support offered to the burn community. Attending Phoenix Camp at the stunning Tangalooma Resort was an overall incredible experience. Suzie O’Neill is an inspiration and along with her team was extremely hospitable towards our attending, as the KIDS Foundation CEO her enthusiasm is contagious. In conclusion, this experience was a resounding success. With 157 attendees, the first of this magnitude for the Foundation, supporting not only burn survivors but trauma incidents the sense of community was strong with the underlying factor, they are not ALONE on their journey of recovery and beyond. I would like to thank the Board on behalf of Tayla, Karla, Jovana and myself for this amazing opportunity. There is much we have all learnt, shared and will leave a lasting impact to be remembered. The girls will be sending through a report on their thoughts and appreciation of being the first to experience this wonderful camp. Regards Michele Henry |

Emerge Aotearoa
Emerge Aotearoa is grateful for the support from the Burns Support Group for an ongoing fire safety campaign we are running.
Emerge Aotearoa is a not-for-profit organisation offering services to the people of Aotearoa in the mental health, addiction, disability, and social housing space. On the week of 10 October 2022 Emerge Aotearoa held its inaugural Fire Safety Awareness Week for all kaimahi (staff) and tangata waiora (clients). Michelle Henry, Troy Hall, and Donna Maria Ritchie from the Burns Support Group attend a virtual hui on Wednesday 12 October 2022. Troy and Donna shared their story with the Emerge Aotearoa whānau. This was truly a sobering experience for the Emerge Aotearoa whānau as they heard, first-hand, of the human impact fires and burns can have on those involved. Emerge Aotearoa is extremely humbled by their story and their openness to share their journey with us. As recognition of their courage Emerge Aotearoa gift Troy and Donna each a pounamu necklace carved specially for them and a Harakeke plant. The Harakeke plant has special significance here at Emerge Aotearoa as it symbolises our Lived Experience Framework. This framework supports the organisation to truly privilege the voice of lived experience and diversity, one of our three strategic pou. Only fitting that we gift a Harakeke plant as they shared their voice with our whānau. Already Michelle has ideas on how the Burns Support Group can support our mahi in 2023 as we continue to ensure the safety of the people we serve, in the whare that we provide. We are grateful for the fire blankets that the group has already donated to Emerge Aotearoa. We look forward to seeing where this partnership between the Burns Support Group and Emerge Aotearoa takes us both. |

Addington Race Night - 1 July 2022
On behalf of the Burn Support Group we wish to sincerely thank Bryce Dinneen for his professional services putting together a wonderful evening at Addington Raceway.
In the short space of time the event was a fabulous triumph, it was also a privilege to meet Bryce, having only had conversations on the phone, it was no surprise of the humble, generous and inspiring man he is! Certainly the highlight of the night was to see Holly Timms, burn survivor and Cantabrian, share her story to a room of 323 people. This was a first for Holly, battling her nerves she proudly spoke of her journey since sustaining burns from a young child. As the saying goes you could hear a pin drop as everyone was captivated by her open and frank words. Holly's father David was also there, we are sure this was truly a proud moment. Also attending to support the event and Holly was Belinda Mckenzie (burn survivor), Beverly Cunniffe (burn survivor) who made the trip from Ashburton with friend Pauline, and Delwyn Breslau who gave a heartfelt thank you to Bryce and his team for their amazing support and the opportunity to raise the profile of the Burn Support Group through the South Island. Funds that have been raised from the event from raffles, auctions and ticket sales will be provided to those working with burns at Christchurch Hospital. Burn Suppor Group would like to thank all those that contributed to making this event the wonderful success it was. Thank you to Christchurch for your warm welcome. |

A very big thank you to Maureen Stone for inviting us along to chat with this wonderful group of ladies. Burn Support Group would also like to extend our appreciation to Belinda McKenzie for sharing her courageous story as a burn survivor. She is now a peer support person and mentor to the New Zealand burns community, and regularly shares her story, models her body for burn resources, and provides education to health professionals, including running sessions in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit at Middlemore Hospital. The BURN SUPPORT GROUP are extremely pleased to be approached by Emma Gils, Clinical Specialty Nurse in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, working at Middlemore Hospital.
Emma had the task of planning for 2020 Education days and it is a welcome request for the Charity to speak with the PACU nurses about the long term effects of burn survivors and the support provided by the Burn Support Group. "PACU nurses will often only see the worst of our burns patients as they wake up from surgery - sore, disorientated and frustrated. Once these patients no longer require surgery at Middlemore we have no closure regarding how they have recovered. It would be beneficial for our nurses to gain a wider perspective about what it is like to be a burn survivor" EMMA GILS Last month saw Donna Gregory-Marshall speak, next month will see burn survivor, Heather Stewart, share her story with the nurses, her time in hospitalisation and the ongoing journey to now. If you are a burn survivor and would like to participate in this opportunity please contact Michele at the office, below are the available dates for the end of year sessions. ON BEHALF OF THE BURN SUPPORT GROUP WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK EMMA for involving the Charity in these beneficial sessions: - 20 July 2020 - 26 August 2020 - 10 September 2020 - 14 October 2020 - 5 November 2020 - 7 December 2020 |

Kerrie has played a vital role within the organisations for the past two years. Congratulations from all of us, we are extremely fortunate to have you on board. On a personal level it is a pleasure to have nominated Kerry, this award is so well deserved. Behind the scenes, Kerrie is indispensable, and it's great to have her in the office and taking part in all the events that are available. Thank you Kerry and long may it continue :) Without the ongoing commitment and strong support of volunteers in our local community on a weekly basis, sports clubs, schools, churches and community groups would not be able to complete a number of key tasks of their functions.

Auckland Baby Show, ASB Showgrounds
17 - 19 August 2018 |
This year's Baby Show exhibition had approx. 13,951 people attend. Alongside the many retailers, Burn Support Group were there to raise the awareness surrounding the effects of burns. It is paramount, with the increase of young children hospitalised for sustaining burn injuries, that more care and attention is taken over the smallest of details in the home where these unfortunate incidents can occur. Statistics tell us 1 in 5 child will occur a burn injury.
The burn survivor journey is long and often painful, not only the physical appearance will alter the future of lives, there is more often than not an emotional experience that can last a lifetime. Prevention and Education will help reduce number of accidents. If you would like the Burn Support Group to speak at your school, community group or health department contact [email protected] for available resources or make an appointment... Thank you to all those that shared their stories with those at the stand along with the generous donations..... |
Waikato Quiz Night - 27 July 2018
Friday 27 July was a wonderful success as Hamilton held the first ever Quiz Night Fundraiser.
With just on hundred people attending, the evening was a lot of fun and laughter. We would like to acknowledge Jim Kayes and his lovely wife, Hedia, who offered their time to support the Charity. Jim was an amazing Quizmaster and had the crowd eating out of his hand - even able to convince guests to sing songs earning those precious extra points! $5,500 was raised on the night. Funding will be spent on equipment for the Waikato Burns Unit along with a contribution towards the Annual Children's Burn Camp 2019. The Burn Support Group would like to make special mention to Hannah Will from the Waikato Burns Unit, Monique Mulhern (Te Runanga O Kirikiriroa) Jess Johnson (Fire Emergency NZ) and Neil Tolan (Western Community Centre) your support and help is truly appreciated. Without the assistance of all those that contribute to the raffles and Auction Items events such as this would not work so successfully. A huge acknowledgement to all those did, Burn Support Group is extremely grateful for your generosity. The venue, FraserTech, was perfect, along with the fabulous caterers. With all the positive feedback we look forward to supporting next year's event.

Dawn Johnston Award Presentation - 20 June 2018
Several weeks ago our dear friends, Beverly and Ian Handisides, invited us to the annual Inner Wheel Presidency Changeover Dinner as their guests. This gesture was not out of the ordinary as they have both held Presidential roles in both Inner Wheel and Rotary over the years and had invited us to these dinners on a couple of previous occasions. It was to be a semi-formal affair to be held at ‘The Lounge’ Howick on the 20th June. They would be collecting us at 6.10pm . . . . our diaries were marked.
After being greeted with champagne flutes, we mixed and mingled with some familiar faces and were then seated at the ‘top table’ with the District Governor, the Incoming President, their immediate family and our friends. After dinner we sat back to enjoy the speeches and to our dumbfounded surprise, Ian took the podium and microphone and started telling our story! I was totally perplexed and wondering WHY??? All was to be revealed when he handed over the microphone to Dawn (Johnston), who then explained that because the motto of Inner Wheel for this year had been chosen as ‘Leave a Legacy’ (and given that at that stage she had only been give two months to live), she wanted to create 'an annual award which gives recognition and pays tribute to a person (or persons), who in the face of adversity displayed perseverance in overcoming obstacles in pursuance of their goals and dreams. They will have responded to adversity, bounced back and in doing so, have been inspirational or helpful in assisting others become full contributors to their community.’ |
Baby Expo, Waikato
29 June - 01 July 2018 Burn Support Group are pleased to announce they will be supporting Waikato Plunket during the Baby Expo 2018. Educational resources are available with helpful hints to keep your home safe.
Burn Support Charitable Trust will be attending again this year. Look for us at the show and pick up your educational information, which could make a difference. http://www.babyexpos.co.nz Many thanks to Kylie Wilson from Waikato Plunket for combining Burn Support Group into this years stand. It is a valued contribution to share resources raising the awareness of both organisations and the support that is available to the community.
With it being a terribly cold weekend it was great to see how many parents and bubs made there way through the Claudelands venue. leaving with helpful hints and resources to aid in safety at home. |

Opportunity of a lifetime for our very own, Brayden Warnock-Hannon.
Burn Support Group are thrilled to announce Brayden Warnock-Hannon is heading to CAMP I-THONKA-CHI in Dallas, 3 - 8 June 2018.
Attending with Brayden is Nicholas Nielson (board member) who will be taking part as a Camp Counsellor. Brayden was chosen to represent New Zealand after participating at the Camp, due to the generosity and kindness of an extremely wonderful couple who wish to remain anonymous. Having met with Brayden they were impressed as to how this great young man is handling his journey as a burn survivor. They felt by offering this valuable opportunity to Brayden it would strengthen, encourage and increase his confidence for the future. Burn Support Group is very proud of Brayden and know he will be an amazing ambassador for the New Zealand Burn Community. It will be exciting to hear him share his experiences which can be utilised at our very own Camp Awhi. It’s difficult to put into words how beneficial Brayden's and my trip was to Camp I-Thonka-Chi because, a) I’m not the greatest journalist in the world and b) how can I accurately portray how amazing it felt to cultivate life-time bonds, help kids conquered fears, and the joy being accepted into a wonderful community sponsored by another wonderful community? But I will try do my best.
In reality the trip was wildly successful in a lot of different ways. Too much to put onto paper, and even better understood by seeing the smiles of our kids in photos. I – going as a Board member of the BSGCT – was able to grow, learn, and build relationships from others’ success and challenges to benefit our own organization and Camp. I – on a personal aspect – was able to grow, learn, and build relationships as someone who simply cares deeply for Burn Survivors, and was able to continue to nurture that by spending time with more Survivors. Something I am always trying to achieve. You learn at Camp that as a Burn Survivor there are similarities despite differences in things like age, ethnicity, gender, or what city you live in. Burns have no preference in who it’ll affect. But what this opportunity gave Brayden and I was to show and share that Burn Survivors can have similarities, struggles, and successes despite being thousands of kilometres apart and coming from different countries and cultures. It also gave us an opportunity to transform our new-found friends’ outlook. Teaching them about Kiwi culture and perseverance, our strengths as a community, that No we are not part of Australia, and this amazing game called Rugby (which we happen to be VERY good at). I truly cannot put into words how grateful I am for this opportunity. How much knowledge I received from the experience. How much I cherish the memories and friendships that I made. And how thankful I am that this wonderful community made this a possibility. But that won’t stop me from trying. Thank you too all who had a part, small or large, in making this a reality for a very well deserving young gentleman and a Kiwi-American Burns Supporter. Nick Nielson (Board Member) |
To The Sponsors: Generosity invites us to put ourselves in another's shoes, see and feel the existence of a pressing need, realise that it is within our power to help, and then act in whatever way we can. ATTENDEES:
TRACEY MAREE HOUIA, LENA TOKUAFU, MICHELE HENRY, DELWYN BRESLAU Julian Burton was a burn survivor of the Bali bombing in 2002. He returned to Australia with 65 other burn survivors and 35% burns. He subsequently and together with Professor John Greenwood and Charge Nurse Sheila Kavanagh, set out to raise $3,000 for a TV and some DVDs for their hospital. Over the past 15 years they have raised almost twenty million dollars to support burn education, care and support initiatives all over Australia and it was felt that the time was currently right to wind up the Trust and disseminate the residual funds. This 3 day forum was attended by 25 participants from all over Australia. It was held at the Adelaide Shores Resort where we were all superbly accommodated in self contained chalets alongside a very long coastal beach. It kicked off with a barbeque on Wednesday evening and concluded with a magnificent black tie Fire and Ice Ball, attended by 400. Almost $1,000,000 of the remaining funds of the Trust were distributed to Kidsafe SA, Kidsafe Australia, ANZBA Association and Burnslife. (The latter being given $100,000) With these funds, Burnslife will be continuing to hold these forums on an annual basis and to which we have been warmly invited. The next forum will be held in Maroochydore, (Sunshine Coast, QLD), in June, 2019. We were all very impressed with the programme content and calibre of the speakers, most particularly Professor Greenwood’s presentation on his ‘invention’ of BMT which will eventually be revolutionizing burn care world wide by eliminating donor sites. Watch this space! We are all extremely grateful for this wonderful opportunity given us by the Burn Support Group Charitable Trust. We all feel and know that we have each gained and benefited from this amazing experience of learning, and meeting other burn survivors, their caregivers and the medical staff who have cared for them. Their hospitality was extended with a terrific final day outing into the renowned Barossa Valley, sightseeing and wine tasting. There is no doubt that our trans Tasman ties are now very strongly bonded and we are all now happily anticipating future combined events. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts. Tracey, Lena, Michele and Delwyn 😄💞🌷😀 |

A Women's Burn Survivor Weekend Retreat
24 - 26 March 2017 Held at Anawhata Beach and designed to cover all the feminine issues faced by adult burn survivors.
This retreat was a safe place for healing and a chance for adult women burn survivors to share feelings about painful experiences perhaps for the first time, while simultaneously enjoying and being in the company of other similarly affected women. Workshop sessions were held by qualified practitioners on: MASSAGE with qualifed massage therapists, BRONY THOMAS and IVANA REDDINGTON from the NZ College of Massage Therapy. MAKE-UP TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES: A Senior MAC Cosmetic Artist, KRISTY LEE WALLACE gave tuition on creative make-up techniques to disguise skin discoloration and scarring. A non-invasive technique to increase self-esteem. THE REAL ISSUES: Workshops were facilitated by National Burn Unit Health Psychiatrist, KAT SKINNER on ‘Self-care and Resilience for Burn Survivors’ and ‘Intimacy and Sexuality’. Vital issues for women burn survivors. |
THE APPEARANCE ISSUES: Of ‘THE ACUTE MANAGEMENT OF BURNS & LONGER TERM MANAGEMENT OF SCARS & REVISION PROCEDURES’ addressed by a plastic surgeon, MARTIN REES who also addressed a Q and A session.
Although quite common overseas, we believe that this is the first such weekend retreat ever held in this country and was facilitated by the Burn Support Group Charitable Trust based here in Auckland. By coming together to heal, the women empower each other, affirming the triumph of the human spirit. |

On Friday 24th February 2017, Alan and Delwyn Breslau were given the opportunity to present at the Opening Ceremonies of the annual Lions Convention in Rotorua, to about 170 of their members, including local dignitaries, Mayor Steve Chadwick and MP Todd McLay.
It was a wonderful opportunity to 'spread the word' about our work and the needs of our burn survivors. Also that we rely solely on the generous support of the public and service organisations such as themselves and that we would be extremely grateful to be chosen as one of their considered charities for any future projects. |
