SOSIUA FAAOA:
I have been a burn survivor going on 20+ years, this will be my first ever burn congress. I hope to meet and form lifelong friendships with other burn survivors and the many burns organisations from all over the world. I would like to thank the Burn Support Group for this epic opportunity and for their continued support, I am super excited to attend this year's burns congress and look forward to representing New Zealand. |
ANGELIQUE BARNES:
I am a married 49 year old mother of 4. My burns story began in 1975, as a 14 month old baby I fell into a bath of hot water. It was thought that I would not survive such injuries, but I sure did! I then began a lifelong physical and emotional journey of acceptance, healing and recovery, with the help of my amazing family who have been my strength and comfort throughout many surgeries and helped me deal with the many social, psychological and physical challenges. Attending the Phoenix World Burns Congress 2023 in Maryland, USA is going to be an incredible experience and opportunity to gain further growth and understanding of burns survivor issues that impact their daily lives. I hope that this experience assists me to help other people who have been burnt and may be struggling with their new changed bodies and lives or in assisting in advocating for burn safety and prevention. I would sincerely like to thank the board members of the Burns Support Group Charitable Trust Inc. for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the New Zealand Representatives attending the Phoenix World Burns Congress 2023. I look forward to attending with much anticipation and excitement. |
JAYNE SWINBURN:
Hey everyone, my name is Jayne. I am a burns survivor of 6 years after an industrial sized pot of boiling water came with me as I fainted. I am really excited to have been chosen to go to the phoenix world burn congress. I can’t wait to experience and learn everything that I can and meet new people. Thank you to the board of trustees for picking me for such an amazing experience. |
RICHARD YOUNGER:
I am a burns survivor from an event in 2002 that left me with 50% full thickness burns. Now some 20 years later and making the most of life, I am a Trustee, Board member and Treasurer of the NZ Burn Survivor's Charitable Trust. Recently elected onto the ANZB CAG working group I hope to continue to support other Burn Survivor's here and abroad. The experience I bring to this year's WBC is the continuation of my knowledge and understanding on how best to support burn survivors, and shared experiences from other survivor's. |
AROHA ANDREW:
Kia Ora, I am a burns survivor of 6 years. I sustained full thickness burns to 65% of my body due to a house fire in 2016. This opportunity to connect, grow and resonate with beautiful people who share similar experiences of loss, grief, trauma and self-image will be invaluable to me. In sharing our experiences, I have found comfort and healing, knowing I was not and am not alone in my journey, and I hope coming to congress ignites those strong feelings of empowerment and strength where I can intern bring those feelings back home to NZ and help others on their own paths of recovery. I cannot express how incredibly grateful I am for this opportunity. Thank you to the board for allowing me this gift of growth and healing. I cannot wait to see where this takes me. |
NICK NIELSON:
I am honoured to be going to the World Burn Congress as a representative of New Zealand and our Charity. After many years of knowing about it, and hearing how it has impacted the lives of those who’ve attended, I am looking forward to learning as much as I can, and bringing back that knowledge to benefit the lives of Survivors in New Zealand. |
