Some basic first aid to use when you get a burn

COOL

the burn

Running the burn under cool water for 20 minutes stops the burning process from continuing. If it is a chemical burn, ensure that you check out the chemical will not react with water.

REMOVE

clothing & jewellery
When burns occour, so does swelling. Tight clothing and restrictive clothing restrict the burnt area from being able to swell.These items may also be contaminated with chemicals or hot liquids.

COVER

the burn
If you have burn gel, apply to the burn and then cover with cling wrap except for facial injurys. Do not use sticky wrap or clothing as these can stick to the burn and cause greater injury.

SEEK

medical treatment

It is important to find out how severe the burns are and how deep it has gone. Get to the closest accident and emergency or hospital to get professional help for the type of burn you have received.

When you receive a burn and if it is severe, Call 111!

Immediately run it under water for at least 20 minutes. Seek medical care.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

While minor burns can often be treated at home, some burns require immediate medical attention. You should seek professional care if the burn is larger than 3 inches, affects the face, hands, feet, groin, or joints, or if it appears deep with white, charred, or leathery skin. Burns caused by chemicals, electricity, or inhalation of smoke also warrant urgent evaluation. Additionally, if signs of infection develop—such as increased pain, redness, swelling, pus, or fever—don’t delay. When in doubt, it’s always safer to consult a healthcare provider to prevent complications and ensure proper healing.
