Burn Support Group Charitable Trust aim to support and assist people with burn injuries by:

Visiting patients and their families in Middlemore Hospital.

Improving patient care through the funding of equipment to help burn patients, over and above that funded by the health service.

Fostering the sharing of information between burn survivors, their families, health professionals and other interested parties.

Offering to accompany and support children who have burn injuries when they return to school.

Providing opportunities for mutual support for burn survivors, such as workshops and our annual Burn Support Children’s camp for 7-18 year olds.

We are an Auckland group, but also provide support for individuals from across New Zealand whom we come into contact with during hospital visiting. We provide patient information packs, and can ‘buddy’ individuals up with others who have had burn injuries. Children from all over NZ can attend the annual camp Awhi.

A WOMEN’S BURN SURVIVOR WEEKEND RETREAT
24th - 26th March 2017

Held at Anawhata beach and was designed to cover all the feminine issues faced by adult burn survivors.

This retreat was a safe place for healing and a chance for adult women burn survivors to share feelings about painful experiences perhaps for the first time, while simultaneously enjoying and being in the company of other similarly affected women.

Workshop sessions were held by qualified practitioners on:

MASSAGE:
with qualified massage therapists, BRONY THOMAS and IVANA REDDINGTON from the NZ College of Massage Therapy.

MAKE-UP:
TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES:
A Senior MAC Cosmetic Artist, KRISTY LEE WALLACE gave tuition on creative make-up techniques to disguise skin discoloration and scarring.  A non-invasive technique to increase self-esteem.

THE REAL ISSUES:
Workshops were facilitated by National Burn Unit Clinical Psychiatrist, KAT SKINNER on ‘Self-care and Resilience for Burn Survivors’ and ‘Intimacy and Sexuality’.  Vital issues for women burn survivors.

THE APPEARANCE ISSUES:
Of ‘THE ACUTE MANAGEMENT OF BURNS & LONGER TERM MANAGEMENT OF SCARS & REVISION PROCEDURES’ addressed by a plastic surgeon, MARTIN REES who also addressed a Q and A session.

Although quite common overseas, we believe that this is the first such weekend retreat ever held in this country and was facilitated by the Burn Support Group Charitable Trust based here in Auckland.

By coming together to heal, the women empower each other, affirming the triumph of the human spirit.

ROTORUA LIONS CONVENTION OPENING CEREMONY

On Friday 24th February, Alan and Delwyn Breslau were given the opportunity to present at the Opening Ceremonies of the annual Lions Convention in Rotorua to about 170 of their members including local dignitaries Mayor Steve Chadwick and MP Todd McLay.  It was a wonderful opportunity to 'spread the word' about our work and the needs of our burn survivors.  Also that we rely solely on the generous support of the public and service organizations such as themselves and that we would be extremely grateful to be chosen as one of their considered charities for any future projects.
