April 2010
WOW! We can’t believe its April already! We hope everyone had a great Christmas, holiday season and Easter and is enjoying 2010 so far... Some great things are happening with Burn Support Group this year, so take a break and enjoy our newsletter.
Camp 2010
It is with great disappointment that we have to inform you that our January camp could not go ahead because there were not enough children who were able to attend. It is our belief that there is a definite need for this camp which gives children a chance to connect with and enjoy the company of others who have been through similar experiences and have similar issues to deal with. Please keep in mind that we will be trying to organise another camp for January 2011 and let us know if you can think of any children that might like to attend!
Quote for the Month

Burn Support Group Charitable Trust, Inc donates to South Auckland Health Foundation
On the 1st of March 2010, Burn Support Group Charitable Trust, Inc. presented the South Auckland Health Foundation with a cheque for $25,000.
When we began last year’s fund raising campaign we asked if there was a particular piece of equipment that the National Burn Centre needed that we could help to raise funds for. We were informed that the centre really needed micro vascular equipment for their operating theatre. This equipment is used for micro vascular tissue transfers in burns and plastic reconstructive surgery and a number of different surgical procedures such as the re- attachment of arteries, veins and nerves.
The substantial amount of money raised as a result of last year’s telemarketing campaign enabled us to donate $25,000 to the South Auckland Heath Foundation to purchase a complete micro vascular kit.

Fireman George’s Safety Message:
This time I would like to concentrate AGAIN on WORKING smoke alarms.
Why do I say WORKING smoke alarms?
Because there are so many houses in New Zealand that have smoke alarms but not, sad to say, so many that are working.
When the Fire Service attend a serious house fire or even worse a fatality as a result of a preventable fire and find smoke alarms installed but no batteries or even having had the alarms removed and sitting on a bench, it doesn't do our hearts and souls good.
To think the occupants have gone to the effort of getting smoke alarms then not looking after them and been the chosen one to have a house fire is truly frustrating.
The message
- A WORKING photoelectric smoke alarm in every living area.
- Tested at least monthly
- Vacuum cleaned at least every 6 months.
- Change the batteries at daylight saving time or when the smoke alarm starts chirping, indicating the battery is going flat.
Just because the chirping stops it doesn't mean the battery is ok now, but normally means it is dead.
It is your life, your families lives, your property and don't be in a false sense of security thinking it won’t happen to you because sometimes and at times too often it is to those who have this attitude that tragedy strikes so often.
Are fires preventable? YES.
Does a fire have to happen to me and my house? NO
Are fire deaths preventable? YES.
When you are sleeping so does the part of the brain that smells smoke. Alarms are safety devices to support your ability to have a good sleep and getting a warning if a fire is developing.
Go to the Fire Service website www.fire.org.nz or contact your local fire station for further information and advice.
President’s Corner
Hi there. Yet another few months have passed us all by and need I say, we are getting closer to Christmas (again) 2010.
On the Burn Support side we are very pleased to report that the number of burns (especially with the little ones) is not great in numbers so maybe the educational message is getting out there... Or is it the lull before the storm? I hope not.
The Board members have all been allocated specific tasks and in their teams I hope to see some really exciting developments for the future of Burn Support for our survivors and your loved ones. Don't forget we are here for you and not the other way round. You can contribute to the team and I would really welcome some feedback. Negative feedback is not bad as it puts issues into our visions to rectify.
A special thanks to Carrie and Nathalie, for without their commitment and passion the Board would not be achieving some of the outcomes.
So people take care of yourself, your loved ones and your neighbours and try to be good.
Regards,
George
President.
